We don’t expect any major changes to the 2023 Outlander due to the recent redesign. All that will be different in 2023 is that the Outlander PHEV’s look and other features will be updated to match the gas-powered Outlander.
2023 Outlander Powertrain
There is no official word from Mitsubishi on the powertrain specifications for the 2023 Outlander PHEV, but we expect it to use the 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder gas engine and the two electric motors from the previous generation. A 40 percent increase in motor power and a 20 percent increase in battery capacity are touted by the manufacturer. In WLTP testing, the range increases from 28 miles to 54 miles, which is approximately 46 miles in North American EPA testing. A larger gas tank capacity is also included in the new Outlander Hybrid’s total driving range.
The ability to drive with just one pedal is a welcome convenience. When accelerating at high speeds, the new powertrain is said be able to maintain EV mode before switching to the gasoline engine to provide additional power.
The IIHS gave the standard Outlander 2021 Top Safety Pick+ designation, the highest possible rating, even though the Outlander Hybrid has not been tested.
Adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, front and rear automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams are expected to be standard driver-assist and active safety technology.
